2.4 Jtdm Starting Problem
Sorry this could take a while...car is an 08 159 2.4 jtdm with 60k. I purchased it 1 month ago from a guy who hadn't used for months. It started reasonably and performed OK. My local garage have given it a major service and replaced the cam belt. It then developed a problem with starting from cold so the glo plugs were replaced, without any improvement, although 2 of the old ones were faulty. It also went into limp mode after 2/3 miles dual carriage way driving. Easily rectified by stopping and starting the engine. The fault was diagnosed as the air flo sensor and replaced. No problem since. But I still have the starting problem. I have also replaced the glo plug ECU. From cold it will cough into life after 2/3 seconds, run like a bag of nails until after another 3/4 seconds it is OK to use. Tick over is very lumpy. From warm ie after leaving it for 1 hour it will try to start and then stop. It will do this for 3 times until it eventually runs. From hot it will start quickly, sometimes the engine turns over too quick to my mind. Tick over is very lumpy.
Not unexpectedly there is a puff of blue smoke from the exhaust whenever it is reluctant to start. There are no fault codes in the memory, the EGR valve has been removed, cleaned and pronounced OK and the DPF is said to be functioning at 70%. The performance is absolutely A1, the turbo boosts as it should and I cannot fault it in any other way.
So that's the problem, my garage are now thinking the fault is with the injectors and suggested I run it with Wynns Injector Cleaner in the tank, which I've done without any improvement...yet. If this dosen't work they suggest removing the injectors for cleaning and testing, another £200-300, with no guarantee it will work. They have checked the performance of the injectors in situ and said they are OK. I had a similar problem with a Merc diesel which was draining fuel back into the tank when left overnight, is there a one way valve in the Alfa?? Any ideas? Any suggestions gratefully received.
