Brake servo?

Twice in the last week it's taken a lot of force to stop the car when braking. Pedal seems to have plenty pressure (doesn't drop to the floor) but feels like the servo isn't working - feels just like one of the old Volvo Amazons I had which didn't have a servo. First time the car was fairly cold but yesterday we'd just driven to York, so not temperature or brakes glazing. 99% of the time it's fine (& I would imagine if the servo was leaking it would be apparent all the time?). I'm aware there was a recall for a servo problem, but I think that was only on the V6?
Can't find any other reference to servo failure on here, so anyone have any suggestions? Anything I could check?
I'm currently in York & don't relish the idea of driving back to Durham if the brakes are likely to fail.
