When I drove a diesel, I was obsessed with the MPG I was getting, since coming over from the dark side and returning to petrol after 22 years, the pleasure is in the drive again.
You can get 30 mpg from the 2.2 easily, especially on longer drives, it uses most fuel on warming up.
What really makes me laugh though is the statement you often see where the petrol (2.2 in particular) is slatted for it being a problematic engine. Its usually mixed in with another 5 or six threads about DPF, EGR and DMF failure or problems with the diesel.
The 2.2 is a good engine in both the Spider and the Brera, it'll sing at higher revs, is smooth and quiet cruising at 70, will return over 30mpg on a distance gives far less trouble than a diesel and has enough power to get you into trouble, if you let it.
The diesel is a good option, but not a better one.
Someone said to me, "so whats so special about an Alfa Romeo then?" I told him, "If you have to ask, you wont understand".
Driving Brera S 2.2, wife drives 939 Spider 2.2 and there is a 1972 Spider 2000 S2 in the garage for fun days.
