First off I will appologise strait away if this isnt the place to be asking this question. You know what its like new forums can be a bit of a mine field to get used to.
At present I have a stunning Celica T Sport & A MKV Golf as my daily grinder. Its cheap as chips to run which is useful as am 25 and ive decided to pack in my job and go back to college and become self employed
So what will be happening is the celica will be getting sold and I will be giving my mother the golf as its alot more substantial than the Yaris T Sport she owns.
So with that said I would like to get myself something nice. At present I have narrowed it down to likely 2-4 cars. One Being a Volvo C30 and the other the Brera. Now of course the Brera is top of the tree for many reasons but I find the engine choices a little baffling.
Ive ruled out the 3.2 as from what ive read it would'nt really suite my needs. So that leave the 2.2 and the 2.4! Now again I appologise am sure this has been done to death and the usual response is "just test drive both" but really Im wanting to ask something diffrent!
First off am no stranger to a derv! I've owned 3 in my short driving career and all of them had been fettled with, exhuast, air mods and of course the remap. My most recent was a vRS which was pretty peachy. Im aware of just how easy a derv is to drive they make progress very well, and very easily to. But I also understand the other side of modern derv ownership. DPF, EGR, Turbo Fails, Faulty Injectors, Broken Dual Mass, Slipping clutches etc etc. I cant help but feel that the extra MPG and the few quid you save on running it can be wiped away very easily by some of the above.
So that leaves me with the 2.2! Im very much passed the "POWERRRR!!" phase and much perfer something that makes me feel special, is comfortable and is quick enough to shun away most litte boy racers and keep up with usual motorway speeds. I understand on paper the 2.2 has been slated as being not as good. But the lack of weight, free smooth revving engine and good mid range punch for a NA Petrol gets overlooked.
So my question is this, is the 2.4 a typical modern derv. Which although easy to drive and cheaper to run, tax and MPG wise will turn into the eventual money pit! Or is the NA 2.2 better in a longer term ownership aspect. With a far smaller catalogue of wallet squeezing eventualitys. Also the fact its a camchain is a nice bonus to!
Any help o wise ones would be very much appreciated.
