So let's start with the symptoms!
I go to start the 159 and I get a " have gearbox checked alarm" oh dear !£!£!£!
There is a flashing gearbox symbol and P is flashing also? The car is now stuck in park in front of the garage with the other car inside, Bugger!
After the very nice AA man plugged it in we find a " communication with gearbox" and " park location error" this does not sound good!
There is a little sliding cover on the passenger side of the central tunnel, inside is a pull tab, pull this and you can engage gears, ok so far, the car drives fine but alarms still flash and you cannot remove the key until you use the blade in the hole beside the key to do the emergency removal.
So.... It drives.. But still with alarms etc
It would appear the gearbox is fine and the gear position shows up on the dash despite the flashing! So the main suspect is the shift gate itself? As I noticed the PRND do not illuminate and the sport/ winter switch did not work?!
to remove the shift gate put the handbrake on, select neutral and then turn ignition off and remove key.
On the bottom of the gear knob is a small chrome ring, push this downward then do the same with the chrome sleeve that sits over the stick, then pull the "trigger " on the gearknob and pull upwards, now the knob is removed you can remove the shift gate and alloy trim in one piece, lever under the alloy trim on the edge nearest the handbrake get your fingers in and pull upwards, it will feel like you are going to break it but keep pulling it will come up!
Then remove the multi plugs and remove it all.
Replace with one you prepared earlier.
BINGO SORTED!!! No alarms all back to normal.
This worked for me and I am hoping there are no other underlying problems that caused the PCB to fail? Only time will tell?
Plus I have an alloy trim to sell?
I hope this helps somebody get out of a problem that on the face of it seems like it will be very expensive but in reality cost me twenty quid and twenty minutes
