Speaking for the 159 with the 1.9 JTD engine, as this is the same engine that is used by Saab in their 9.3 it may well be there is a similarity in the gearbox as well. Do Saab use a Fiat gearbox?
Anyway, being a previous owner of said Saab model, 93 1.9Tid, I can confirm that the issue is not restricted to Alfa Romeo cars. I questioned this 'characteristic' with Saab when I got the car, and apart from it having a dirty gear change there was no further detrimental development during my 70000 miles with the car. My 159 therefore has a very familiar gearchange.
Someone said to me, "so whats so special about an Alfa Romeo then?" I told him, "If you have to ask, you wont understand".
Driving Brera S 2.2, wife drives 939 Spider 2.2 and there is a 1972 Spider 2000 S2 in the garage for fun days.
