159 2.4 JTDM failing to start

Not very mechanically minded, so just looking for some help before I pay for the RAC to come out. 159 2.4 JTD not starting:

1 - All electronics/lights/radio come on when the key fob is inserted.
2 - Press the start button, nothing, a faint clacking sound from somewhere in the engine as the button tried to initiate whatever it is meant to to start the engine.
3 - The car was sat for about 10 days, in the cold without being started.

I'm not sure, but being as all the electrics start up, then I would assume the battery is ok? Or maybe it just doesnt have enough charge to start the engine?

Much appreciated guys

Could be a weak battery if its been stood for some time in cold weather. These cars seem to be ighly strung when it comes to batteries!

Yes that was my first though too. Try recharging the battery they are only 100% for 4 years or so . if older get a new Bosch one.

Sounds very much like the battery hasn't got enough juice. That engine needs a fair amount of power to get it to start. Probably good idea to get the RAC out to get it started, then monitor it. If it continues to lose charge in the cold weather over a few days then time for a new one.

Original battery on mine failed while still under warranty. Battery guy was very scathing about its specifications and replaced it with something much beefier. No problems since.

Hope OP gets his problem to start.

I'd just like to share that my original battery lasted for 6 years(!!!). One morning the car wouldn't start and the local RAC came and the guy was surprised to see the original battery still mounted.

My 2008 original Alfa battery is still fitted to my 159 too - hoping it'll pull through another winter!

Just to update, RAC bloke came out, fitted a new battery, car starts like a charm now. The new one was their premium exide battery, and it is physically huge! Turns out the battery in my car was tiny, half the size and cold crank power of the new RAC one. I always had to give it 2 or 3 glow plug warm ups to get it to start, thought it was glow plugs or swirl flaps, turns out it was just the battery! My Blue and Me bluetooth now works as well, the feeble old battery probably couldn't power the bluetooth receiver.

THe new battery has fixed a lot of issues.......just goes to show.
