What sets it off is a count down timer in percentage approx 1hour running engine time equals 5%. There is also a pressure sensor which monitor's the clogging. For example if following a successful regeneration of the dpf the sensor recognises 20% clogging 80% free then your next regening should be in 16 hrs running time. It has to make the temp in the dpf reach over 600 c to make it happen that's why desiel is fired in on the exhaust stroke.
Its best to run at about 2,000 revs to achieve Max heat in minimum time.
PS its designed to happen so you don't,t notice it, should last about 10 mins.
