SOLVED Rear Suspension Rattle
For the last couple of weeks I've been troubled by a rear suspension rattle. It sounds like a cross between a rattle and squelch. Something like the noise of a spare wheel not properly tightened into the spare wheel tray.
After checking just about every suspension joint I nudged the exhaust and thought that sounds similar. I then set about some serious pushing and pulling with a person inside to confirm it was the same noise. I could feel a slight rattle but not trace its source. So I sprayed everything with graphite lubricant and the noise was halved but not cured.
So back on the ramps again and more pushing and pulling. Eventually I traced it to the nearside silencer and its support rubber. In the picture you can see that the metal pin is loose in the rubber allowing about 10mm of slack. The pin is just slapping up and down in the rubber. For the moment I've filled it with grease and the noise has gone. Just need to replace the rubber now.
