On Sunday night my car started to rumble a low pitched rumble, non-metallic, directly related to wheel speed, starts at about 5MPH. It's gotten worse with about 60 miles of A-road driving.
Yesterday i lifter the car, put it on stands and let it idle in 6th gear (speedo indicating about 40MPH) to try and pinpoint the noise.
(I've checked the obvious; deformed tires, missing balancing weights, things fouling et)c
I noticed i had a split CV boot on the inner joint of the drivers side drive shaft where it joins the intermediary shaft. But the noise seems to be coming from the diff area of the gearbox....
The car is with my local rusted indi. at the moment, because i don't have the time/space to properly investigate, and i need it up and running ASAP.
IF it is the gearbox, and i have to replace it, i understand the 159 2.4 shares it's gearbox with a load of GM models. Alfa labeled gearboxes retail at many many pounds...but the Vauxhall labeled ones start at £50 and seem to be much more plentiful.
