JTS 2.2 Crankshaft Pulley Fault

The car suddenly started to make a loud scrapping sound from the engine which on investigation has identified a faulty crankshaft pulley balance weight. The rubber bonding the balance weight to the pulley has fallen apart, possible oil contamination? Luckily I stopped the car before more serious damage was done to the timing chain cover etc.

Can anyone help explain what could have caused the pulley to fall apart? Is this a common fault?
