mine has done this for ages. Correlates with how hot the unit gets, the hotter the more likely the fault so in summer it is quite frequent. It sits over a plastic box that can be very hot. Does it on own burnt and purchased discs. Will clear after the unit has been switched off, but sometimes having to wait about an hour or more. Shame there is no manual or rather mechanical eject button on the unit! i've become a dab hand at pulling the unit out and replacing it again!
given all this I assume there is some distortion going on which causes the laser not to pick up the information on the disc properly, remembering in this digital age one dropped "bit" and your stuffed. No gradual failure these days, its all binary!
