Fuel Gauge - odd happening!

Noticed the following for the first time today (note have only had my 159 for 6 weeks!)...
* Orange fuel gauge low level lamp ON
* Still approx. 1/8 tank of fuel remaining
* Approx. 100km range still available
* After approx. 50kms travelled following message "Limited Cruising Range" displayed on Instrument Panel and a beep (which I understand is normal)
* Fuel gauge needle just under 1/8th mark so no significant movement
* But... very shortly after this (maybe 5km?) needle literally dropped from just under 1/8th to empty after travelling about another 5kms!

Is this normal and why does the needle react so quickly?
Is the gullet of the fuel tank tapered so the rate to empty is not linear?

Anyway I thought this weird. have not seen this happen in any other car I have driven.

Alfa's eh!

The gauge in my Brera doesn't drop like that. Like you say all other aspects seem normal i.e. the fuel light and limited cruising range however mine doesn't just drop when it's low down the gauge

All you said (apart from the last bit) is normal but I had this about 2 tanks of fuel ago. It's only done it once in approx 1 year of ownership though. I've also had it where I've filled up and the fuel gauge hasn't moved for nearly 100 miles but that was only once too. I haven't really worried about to be honest.

I've experienced the exact same issue. Its as if it drops to force you refill ASAP and not run out, even though there is more remaining than what it shows. Sounds like some intelligent Alfa programming, but I doubt it.

Don't worry about it. My 159 does exactly the same.
Bit scary the first time it happens though.........

I think the fuel gauge is woefully inaccurate at the bottom end ... I never drive far once it's hit South

Every car I've owned, and there's been a lot, have done this.
The bottom part of the gauge always goes in no time, the top part takes much longer.
