Had the Brera for 2 months now & posted on here about the strange noise & lack of power I sometimes get under acceleration (http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-...nge-noise.html
). Ended up cleaning & then replacing the camshaft solenoids, - cleaning them made a brief improvement, & after replacing them I thought the issue was sorted... but it keeps coming back! I'm getting no EML on, but apart from that it shows all the symptoms other people have had with a camshaft solenoid problem & seems to occur shortly after any "spirited" driving - dropping a gear & revving it a bit also generally clears it for a while.
I'm now suspecting that the actuators are sticking due to sludge in the oil - the oil was changed before I bought the car, & I had it flushed & changed again 3 weeks later (after replacing the solenoids) & did the same again last weekend - each time I've noticed a difference & the problem seems to happen less often afterwards, but is still there intermittently. I think the car had been stood for a while before I bought it, (which I don't think has done it any good). Oil doesn't look particularly dirty (but didn't look 'new' when it came out either).
Pointing further to sludge is the way the oil temp gauge is behaving - when I bought the car, it didn't work at all, but since the last 2 engine flushes & oil changes it has started working better - initially it just started going up a little, but after the last engine flush it's nearly showing operating temp before dropping to the bottom again.
I don't really want to have to drop the sump & remove the camshaft covers & physically clean the engine out, & changing the oil every month is a bit costly, so does anyone else have any suggestions? I've considered trying Wynns Hydraulic Lifter Cleaner which has some good reviews for cleaning out the tappets, (but I don't know if it'll get into the VVT or not & won't do much if sludge is being pulled up out of the sump)?
Any help/suggestions greatly accepted.
