GT 916 spider

thinking of buying a 159 diesel

Need to replace my 147 which is at the end of its economic life, just landed a decent jopb with a longish commute and need something cheaper to run.

Looking at a diesel Alfa.

Rented a 159 diesel a few years ago in Italy and was impressed by it.

Any issues with them.

Have looked at auto trader, loads of diesel GT's on there as well for similar money.

Practicality of 4 doors vs coupe is not an issue

Brera and spiders nbg not enough head room.

As well as the 147 which will be sold shortly we have a 916 3.2 spider and a GT 2.0

Is the 159 a good choice and are there any issues with them

Are not interested in either Mito or Guilietta

Try the buyers guide in the sticky, I'd go for a Ti if you can!

Any spelling/ grammatical errors are purely there to annoy!

Look out for when cambelt/water pump were changed. 1.9s have had some reported issues with M32 (manual) gearbox (especially if its been mapped) - less of an issue on Ti? Some reports of undertray rust. DPF on earlier models seems more prone to problems (especially if car has ben used for lots of short commutes so it never regenned properly) - may be less of an issue on later models (positioned closer to engine, so burns off soot hotter). Front suspension can be weak.

Otherwise comfortable and stylish cabin, great handling and road presence, and simply the most beautiful car on the road (in my view ). 2.4 (5 cylinders) has a great engine note, and lots of lovely low down power - it is more expensive in fuel and tax though.

Go on

today, I have had my 159 1.9 diesel for 4 years and a day. 4 MOTS have cost me a pair of wipers and the car now has 96000 miles and is 6 1/2 years old. I feel like I got it last week and still love it. I would not change it for any other car ( within reason ) My only tip would be to go to the top of your budget and buy the best your pocket allows.

I've had mine for over a day now (159 2.4 jtd) and have lost count of the amount of times I've been to look at it. Handles great, lovely place to sit, just make sure you got one that's been cared for and it should be fantastic. Had Alfas before and they've always been better than you'd dream to expect if you look after them...

Traded my wife for a 2010 JTD Ti 4 weeks ago. Best decision I've made! No arguments, does as "she's" told, less maintenance and just as lovely to look at!
In all seriousness very happy with my purchase. As previously noted make sure it's got a sound history (goes without saying I guess) and find yourself an independent Alfa mechanic who knows his/her stuff, i.e. lives and breaths Alfa. They should then be able to advise on preventative maintenance measures and save cost in the long run.
