Hmmmm, I see what you're saying Ned. I'm an IT consultant though and as I see it, it's firmware flash, which I've done to thousands of devices over the years from smartphones to UCS chassis.
I know the hardware version so in theory if it's a matter of sourcing the updated or modified firmware (or making the mod myself) and following disaster recovery protocols (back up the existing flash, ensure uninterrupted power supply, etc etc). The difficulty is sourcing the correct software and as you say, you have a verified source and I don't!
My query really was if this was a software update, or if is is a minor remap to allow for changes in friction levels etc that occur as you put miles on the car, or extended glow plug relay timings for example as Cuore suggested.
You're right Gangerly, a flash comparison might give us that detail BUT you'd have to be certain that the map was applied to identical hardware to be sure you're only seeing the delta changes. Really we'd need a before and after flash from the same ECU to compare.
