Horrible noise on startup (intermittent)
I am new to the forum and new to Alfas. And what better way to get to know the forum with a technical question.
I recently bought a 56 plate 159 1.9jtdm Lusso. It's a high miler (100k) but in excellent condition inside and out - the leather interior looks brand new and the outside is also in great nick. So I jumped in with my heart and bought it.
Then a mate of mine told me his brother worked at the Alfa Dealership in North London. I spoke to him and he said he would give the car a diagnostic free of charge. It passed with flying colours (waiting for the results was as nerve racking as getting results from the doc!)
However a week later it developed an intermittent problem:
I will describe it the best I can and not being a mechanic will use laymans terms;
The starter motor will crank a couple of times followed by a rather unsettling heavy cranking sound, then the engine will fail to start. As well as the sound there would quite a violent judder/shake coming from the engine bay.
So describing the sound the Alfa dealer I booked it in for an inspection. They told me that it was the alternator and would need replacing (£600 inc L & VAT).
I asked if it could be fixed - they said no.
I was suspicious... So I took it to my local garage and he took off the Alternator and reported that it seemed fine but the bearings in the alternator tensioner arm were gone. So he replaced that and said let's see how it runs.
I ran it less than 20 miles, stopping and starting along the way to see if the problem would reoccur. It didn't as before but there was definitely a little judder before start up. So not 100% convinced.
I took the 159 to another garage (Veloces in New Barnet) and he said it could be a flywheel... but he didn't inspect the car just watched / listened to a vid I took when it made the noise
So two questions really:
1. Has anyone had a similar sounding problem?
2. Has anyone used Veloces?
Any advice on the above would be hugely appreciated.
