Roof problem that simple?

In recent days the roof was getting slower and slower to operate and got to the point where I had to help the rear deck lift and help the hood start to fold away. Putting it back up would go in one operation except that the rear bow wouldn't lock and we got the cycle incomplete error. To start with I could get it to complete by slightly opening the roof and re-closing it with the button. However yesterday this trick wouldn't work and there was nothing I could do to get the hood close to complete. This meant the drivers side window would not close at all. Then I got temporary hood fail message.

STUPIDLY I thought that an electronic reset might help so I disconnected the battery and when reconnected found out you can't reset the windows with the roof not properly shut and I ended up with both windows stuck open and an unsealed rear bow (but the frame was locked as the struts were locked straight). I garaged it overnight and this morning the hood cycle completed.

I took it to the dealer and paid my 1hr investigation fee and they fixed it, saying that all it needed was a thorough lubrication!! Sure enough the action is much faster and no stopping. Ive tried it several times and it seems fine now. Surely it cant be that simple? It had a full service and MOT last July and just had MOT last week. We dont use the roof all that much - could it have seized in a year?

Just thought I would share my experience as it might help someone. It did look like they had pulled the manual hood release as things in that compartment had been moved around, so maybe they reset the hydraulics too?

The only downside was my alfa cap wipped off my head on the M62 when I looked up and it caught in the slipstream on the way home

So grease your hood mechanism if its taking longer to go down or up and save yourself the 100

Tin of wd40 and 30 minutes... I'm off out to give it a go!

Roof only ever fails when lifting From the front window. But strangely it works the first time, but if I close the roof and try to re-open it will fail...
Never have a problem closing the roof again though...

I've had that problem, only with mine they charged me 300 for a realignment & recalibration .
No mention of lubrication.

You say the struts were locked out - is that the same as the manual levers each side?
If it is, then that always solved the problem for me, by manually pushing the levers so the roof locked-out and the windows then closed via the button again.

Maybe you caught your problem early and got it sorted while it was still an easy fix.
