800 miles from home, what would you do?
We are on our annual holiday to south west France and I am seeking the guidance and opinion of you on a strange dilemma. I will describe symptoms and the situation as accurately as I can. We have a 159 2.4 and it's a simply wonderful car for long trips.
Before setting out I replaced the EGR and installed the modified gasket I got from Alfaworkshop. I cleaned the tmap and the MAF. All that was occasioned by a hesitation in running and a tendency to stall when coming to a halt.
I have had a change oil warning for a few weeks and the day before we set off the oil and filter were changed and I changed the air filter for good measure.
It ran terrifically on the run down to Dover until about 125 miles short of the overnight stop in Potiers when the check engine light came on and it lost all power. The engine ran but the slightest incline had it changing down and speed dropping to 45mph. Just perfect for a French motorway. I had been cruising at dead on the sped limit, 81mph.
I pulled off and checked for loose bits and bobs but could see nothing dramatic. After a while it started to run better but the engine check light stayed on.
Made it to the overnight stop. Next day we carried on for the 250 miles to the villa near Pau. It ran ok, but was slightly hesitant. Off the motorway it gave the off hiccup when accelerating.
The next day, yesterday, when starting I got a message that hill assist wasn't available, check engine came on but it ran ok to the supermarket, about 10 miles away. Starting it to come back here and no check engine light, no hesitation, no messages at all.
Went out in it again this morning and it was fine.
I can't help wondering if it's something to do with the battery or perhaps the earth connection. Could that cause the power loss symptoms?
Sorry for the long post but although I have tools with me to do some bits and pieces I would hate to get my budgie smugglers dirty. I have the prospect of running around to do here, but then another 800 miles home in 2weeks.
So, what would you do. Chance it and limp it home if the problem recurs or change the battery out here?
