Diesel in oil. Help and advice required please?
Hi. I'm having a few problems with general running and we think we have identified the cause. Shortly after purchasing the car, I noticed the oil was about 1 litre or so above the max on the dipstick. We replaced the oil and set back to max. I have since done around 700 miles or so and it's back to about 1 litre over again. I'm not really having any problems with regens, I think I have had 2 in the 700 miles and both were successful. I do do a lot of short 3 mile trips which I know isn't ideal for Diesel engines but I do take for a Italian tuneup once every 2 weeks.
Anyway, mpg is quite low around 30mpg ish and maybe 35 on a steady motorway run. I read on here to put a screw driver on each injector and listen through the handle and injector 1 and 2 (the ones on left of engine if looking from the front) and they are silent but injector 3 and 4 are very noise and have a loud tapping noise which now I have noticed can be heard in general running of the car at idle and load. I'm thinking injector 3 and 4 could be blocked and dripping fuel instead of working properly. Would this cause them to tick or could they be completely faulty? Ideally speaking, it's difficult to send off injectors to be cleaned as I cannot really go without my car for a few days. I will do this if I have to but hoping to get some advice/tips/help before my car goes to mechanic again on Thursday for another oil change. What else could we check that could be causing the diesel in the oil? Car idles ok and pulls ok but I came from a citroen c5 2.0hdi with 138bhp and the alfa feels slower than this and the alfa is a lot smaller and lighter car so I'm pretty sure there are some horses missing and something is wrong.
My mechanic has a hardcore obd machine so hoping he can check injector values to see if one or more is knackered. He is going to take them out and check them and replace the o rings. Also going to reset the oil change degradation sensor as this was not done last time. Any other ideas what to look for?
Sorry for long post. I hope someone can give me some tips to pass to my mechanic before Thursday morning.
Edit - just been doing a bit of forum reading, does my car have a oil cooler? 1.9 jtdm 08 plate. If so, I'm wondering if my mechanic put in the recommended amount of oil but there was still quite a lot left in the oil cooler and filter and it was just overfilled? I haven't had my oil professionally analysed or anything, it's just that it's about a inch over the max level on dipstick.
