Welcome to the Forum.
If this was me I would try the following.
Speak to the French Dealer that sold the car when new and identify if the engine has been replaced at any time.
Check who serviced the 159 and find out, if its had an engine change other than the supplying dealer.
Have you checked the engine mounts, does it look like they have been disturbed. As is not disturbed, then maybe its been a typo error when the 159 was first registered, common issue here in the UK, is errors with the specification i.e, registered as a Turismo or Lusso, even though its a genuine T.I model.
In France can you do a HPI check, like you can in the UK, this will show up if crashed, finance outstanding and how many miles have been recorded etc etc.
How many owners have there been ?
Maybe it has had a genuine engine replacement for some reason and the previous owners did not register it and thus are not helpful now, hence why it went through the auctions. Making all liability on the buyer.
