You're not going to like this..but can i suggest a compression test...
When I first bought mine, it had spent a long time with an EGR fault, which had caused the valves to coke up..as a result, when warm it started fine, but cold, it would start, idle irrattically for about 3 seconds and then shut down again..
Then it'd start on the second or third go, with a lovely bluey grey diesely smelling puff of smoke.
Apparently because the valves weren't sealing the cylinder correctly, it caused the problem, also my swirl flaps were knackered as well.
Unfortunately, the cheapest cure is pulling the head off and decoking the valves....which when carried out by the dealership was an 8 hour job each way. Scary amounts of labour had i not had a warranty.
