When I replaced my 916 Spider, I looked at all three Brera engine variants as I had a 2.2SV previously for two years and a 2.4 diesel 156SWm for the same time beforehand.
OK, assuming standard versions...
The 2.2 is a fine engine, but in my opinion it was underpowered as the car is heavy - great cruiser and a fab place to be though.
Again, personal opinion, but a car that looks this good feels wrong with the diesel rattle at low speed cruising, plus all the diesel additives, EGR delete etc. seemed too much bother (though I am no mechanic BTW), plus if low mileage, the engine is not best suited according to the forum. If you are commuting, probably the better option ?
So, the 3.2 is just glorious, it is just the noise, it is intoxicating (that could be the fumes though
) and people turn their head for the car, but hear it first win-win ! If you are doing mainly low miles (10k a year for me) and are not worried about 20mpg and £500 road tax per year if after 2007, then indulge in a good one and simply enjoy driving it
My personal preference is the Q4 four wheel drive rather than the S and the grip means I chicken out before the car does around corners - when we had all that snow a year last January, I was out with the Land Rovers and other 4x4 wagons
. There is 260bhp through a variable rear bias 4-wheel drive system which is just great, even when it is wet it will pull from the lights/roundabout/junction.
Hope that helps !?
