Looking to 'restore' a 159
Hi All, I recently left the Alfa fold after selling my Brera, but I'm now kind of back after agreeing to help my mate fix up his 159 1.9 jtdm.
It has been stood for about 12 months or so after he lost patience with it following what I think is just a relativley minor EGR/DPF/MAF issue.
I have owned 2 diesel Alfa's, a 147 1.9 jtdm and a 2.4 Brera; both of which I experienced EGR issues. The symptoms in the 159 are a bit different to what I experienced though; it loses pretty much all power after reaching 35/40 mph and won't go above that speed (it revs and gets up to that speed ok up until that point with no issues and then just hits a wall and wont go any faster), whereas my experience was the opposite really where there would be no power at all then a sudden surge of power. Does his sound like an EGR fault? Hopefully it is as it's a DIY fix.
It's a shame he's let it get like this really as it's a really nice example- its navy blue with cream leather interior and its the Lusso 2006 model and covered 58,000 miles. He was going to get rid of it for a stupid sum of money (around £500), to which I told him under no circumstances he will do such thing!
There are a couple of other things too- a real wheel has completely seized and will not move (the AA failed to release it too), all brake pads/discs will probably need changing and a few relatively minor cosmetic issues need addressing. It has a decent service history but will need servicing again before a sale.
Any input would be greatly appreciated, particualry on the potential EGR issue.
