My brera - best car i've driven in years
I've now had my '06 37k mile Brera 3.2 Q4 (& my first Alfa) for 3months and it is by far the best car I've driven in 40years of driving. The recent remap has made a tangible but modest improvement with out changing the character of the car and also improved the mpg by 8-10% (from 22 to 24).
Normally 'common sense' would have prevailed and I would have bought a 2.4jtdm and had it remapped but the all wheel drive is very noticeable on the twisties (ie almost everywhere in the Highlands) - giving excellent balance and control and then there's the addictive exhaust note.
It is also a revelation (almost!) not having the delay in steering response common on most front heavy fwd cars as well as the instant throttle response from the absence of turbo lag.
There is no torque steer, good steering feel and weight, excellent brakes, good gearchange and lightish clutch.
I don't know whether the previous owner did any suspension mods, but I cannot find anything to criticise with the current setup and it already sits quite low so ground clearance is occasionally an issue.
Todate it has had new discs and pads, full service, new windscreen, new Dunlops, new rear light cluster, remap and the clunk from the steering on right hand lock has vanished. (maybe the ZX1* I added to the power steering fluid did something or maybe it was due to the car not having been driven for about a year before I bought it).
*team-zx1.co.uk it has a NATO stock number so is not snake oil and I've been using it in everything for years - add to oil, fuel, hydraulics, gearboxes etc for friction reduction.
Anyone tried cataclean or similar products or fitted sports cats? The exhaust will probably not last much longer.
I wonder how much the standard system inc cats is from an Alfa dealer (the back boxes look okay but will be clogged)
