I've been looking for a 159 estate preferably in Ti, but possibly will settle for a Lusso (more of them about if nothing else).
There seem to be plenty of 1.9 models about, but a friend (knows his cars and also drives a 159) says go for something bigger - either diesel or V6. Preferring a lower mileage example, my budget probably points towards a 2.4 diesel.
I'm not too worried about economy, but is there an argument for the larger engines in terms of reliability? Anything obvious I should look out for when viewing? Had friends with DPF issues (not Alfas) so don't want any avoidable issues.
I have my 1.9 Lusso SW for sale in the classifieds although I'm hoping not for long as I have a buyer that needs to sell his car to finance it. I've changed the gearbox oil twice during my ownership and the gearbox is sweet as the proverbial nut. Someone will probably be along soon to tell you it's about to go any minute now but if you're interested it's a great car and in beautiful nick inside and out. I have had the dpf cored out and a mild remap that hasn't put too much strain on the clutch etc so no worries on that score if you do lots of short trips. Let me know if you're interested.
The other day I had 3 full suspension mountain bikes (very light ones to be fair) and a heavy kid's bike on the roof, a heavy kids bike along with plenty of kit in the boot, 3 adults and 2 10 yr old kids in car. 2.4 TI sportwagon, I was barely aware of any weight in car, pulled like a train, absolutely awesome and it never bottomed out. Alfatune remap coming up in a few weeks, so it should be even more awesome a family bus. However, if I didn't already have a high tax band V6 GT, I'd have bought a V6 159, just because they sound nicer.
My 2.4 has been mildly tweaked with the usually discussed mods on this forum. I tried the 1.9 (that engine is a peach) but the torque I get from my slightly more agricultural 2.4 is what swung it for me. Cracking cars just watch for the DMF being on its way out.
I currently have a 159 TI SW 1.9 Qtronic and have also had 1 2.4 TI SW, 1 2.4 Lusso SW and 1 2.4 Lusso saloon. For me the 2.4 TI SW was probably the best of the bunch apart from the economy which is why i looked for a 1.9 when my 2.4 was written off. Having read the horror stories on here about the 1.9 gearboxes i feel that ive go the best of both worlds, Reasonable economy and speed with a good qtronic gearbox. Must admit i want the 1.9 remapping in the summer for a little extra power though!
after 15 years driving alfas, petrols, 155's 166s, ive been using a 156 1.9 16 v mjet for the last 3 years and its been the worst car ive ever owned in terms of cost to run, i literally have to save 200 quid a month just to offset when its fails again and has to be fixed at the garage. This is mainly driveshafts, clutch, dmf, injectors and hosts of boost problems. So at this point im scared a buying another car with this complex diesel engine/drivetrain- i dont what to buy another shed.
at this point im thinking of going petrol and Japanese, however everytime i walk past a 159 Ti ... well you know...
so does the 2.0L jtdm engine move the game on ? is it better than the original diesel engines ?
surely removing the DPF is an mot fail now
