For the sake of stats, I sold my 2008 MY08 159 1.9 Lusso with 95K last Oct for £5000. I bought my 34K Brera S 2.2 for £10250 at the same time. I got what I felt was a fair market price for the 159, although it was immaculate and I did perceive it to be worth more. I only sold it because I wanted a Brera, it had to be an S, it had to red and it had to be low mileage. So yes there are cheaper Breras around, but I was happy to pay what I did to get what I wanted.
Reading other threads in this section of the forum, you dont have to go far to see some people talking down the value of the cars, they'll be the buyers, complaining about the high prices Veloces ask. Then a thread like this talking up the value of cars, the sellers. All my life I have found when selling anything, I will hear "Oooo, theres not a lot of call/need/market for those, not worth an awful lot I'm afraid", but then when I want buy something, just the opposite.
I would not worry too much if the car I bought was more than the going price IF it was exactly what I want. I got more money for the 159 than I had achieved in P/X on previous cars in the past (similar age/miles).
On the subject of depreciation. When I bought the 159 (my first Alfa Romeo) I was concerned to read of the catastrophic depreciation the cars suffer. However, using What Car?s own depreciation % figures I checked the new list price of a 159 Lusso against a BMW 3 series, after adding lots of extras to get it to Lusso spec. Whilst the % depreciation on the 3 series was allegedly lower than the 159, you would actually lose more cash with the BMW because it started with a much higher price.
With so many ex-fleet BMW's and Audi's now hitting the market their resale prices can only plummet, however is likely to further drag down all other car values including Alfa Romeo.
Someone said to me, "so whats so special about an Alfa Romeo then?" I told him, "If you have to ask, you wont understand".
Driving Brera S 2.2, wife drives 939 Spider 2.2 and there is a 1972 Spider 2000 S2 in the garage for fun days.
