Morkey - perhaps the problem lies in the fact that production was sub-contracted to Pininfarina who closed series production in November 2010 and restructured to be a design office rather than a manufacturer. All manufacturing ability ceased.
The component itself was probably sub-contracted to a supplier who is probably owed money by Pininfarina and won't want to co-operate.
In terms of manufacturers responsibility to hold parts, there is plenty of legislation in place to stop third parties from copying parts but very little to say that a manufacturer must maintain a supply of spares. (The alleged "7 year rule" does not appear to have any official International backing or enforcement)
A terrible situation as you say for a car less than 4 years old.
