I think the chain issue has been quite overstated. There are a hell of a lot of 2.2 engines out there and relatively few issues with chains. The issue with chains appears to be caused by sluged oilways which happens when the oil is not changed frequently enough. The manufacturer schedule isn't really enough, they said change the oil at 18K/18,000 miles but 12K is much safer. If the car you're looking at is low mileage and has had reasonable oil changes (say every 12,000 miles), then you shouldn't really have anything to worry about.
If you're going to worry about the chance of the timing chain failing on the 2.2, then you really ought to be worrying about the turbo failing on the 1750... In other words these events are unlikely so don't let them put you off - just check the service history and have a good test drive. As with any car, turn it on and off a few times to see if any warning lights stay on.
