Resurrecting an old thread rather than starting again.
On my 17"s it had 225/45 Avon ZV5s when I bought it - not the factory size of 225/50. I put a set of Kumho KU39s on in the same size - these are admittedly 94s and not the recommended load rating of 98. I wore them down to the legal limit in approx. 20k miles and had absolutely no issues with them - grip in the wet or dry was brilliant, up there with the best I have had on any other car, and I think I've used all the premium brands in the past 20 odd years. The 225/45 KU39s can be had for around £85 each fitted.
I've just put a set of 235/45-17 Kumho KU39s on yesterday. These are a 97 load rating, so a lot closer than the 94s that were on before. They are about £10-£15 a corner more than the /45 profile and seem to offer a slightly better, slightly quieter ride. Sidewall height is a lot closer to standard, too.
You can also get the KU39s in the Alfa specified 225/50-17 98XL size and rating, but these are about £15-20 each more than the 235/45s.
Make something idiot proof and someone will only go and build a better idiot...
