It is an insurance, there is no doubt about that and like any insurance buy the wrong policy and they will find any reason why not to pay out. But £450 PA for this type of policy is much more than anyone need pay. See my post above, the 3 year insurance through RAC includes all the roadside cover you'll need and its around £300 a year.
If you had to pay £450 PA I think there would be a strong case for saving up the 'premium' as a contingency, however, how many would in fact put the money away for a rainy day and you would also have to be financially prepared to pay out for a possible major failure in year one. It's not difficult to have to spend over £1000 on a fairly simple repair these days.
