Possible to decrease \ improve the 159 Diesel emmissions ?

Hi all , just paid up my annual motor tax @ a whopping 570 here in good ol Ireland.
Currently the 159 1.9 JTDMis rated emmissions at 157g/km > that cost 570 !!!

The next band down tops off at 155g/km > 390 > still expensive but a "saving " of 180 per year !!

Is it actually possible to improve the emmissions so that it drops to say 155g/km ?

Do they actually measure the emissions then charge you your tax based on that or just get the rating from the published figures? If it was the latter, your stuffed as it wouldn't matter what reading you managed to get it to, you would still pay the book price.

I would have thought it was based on published figures, any other system would surely be open to abuse.

That sounds like pure bad luck that it's over by 2g... The actual amount emitted is directly related to fuel consumption, so your actual CO2 could be anything depending on how you drive.

The 2.0JTDm is the way to go, with its lower claimed emissions, but as we know, in the real world it would make very little difference to fuel economy apart from that €180 saving.
