I love my 2007 2.2.
Yes I've modified it with many of the S bits and bobs, but it's because I love it, not because it needed doing. In terms of mechanical work needed
to keep it running I've had nothing yet and it's passed the 2 MOTs I've put it through without any fails. I do have 2 irritations that I manage:
1. Corrosion on the subframes - had an advisory on my last MOT but as I take it to a good garage (NJS in Pershore) they always make sure they're in good nick. On my first service with them (which was my most recent, after my MOT advisories) they wire brushed off the surface rust, treated it, painted over it and then waxoyl'd it. And they do that as standard on every service which I have annually, so with it looked after it's nothing to worry about.
2. Hesitation - it is an issue but you can adjust your driving style around it. I've been tempted to change my 2.2 to a 3.2 but with the 3.2 comes much higher tax, higher insurance, higher fuel costs and higher weight (especially if it's a Q4). The 3.2 is quicker but I've read plenty that it's extra weight makes it also feel less nimble. I think the 2.2 is a good compromise for what I want and what I can afford.
Neither of those are deal breakers. But as said above, if my car was written off tomorrow I'd absolutely go buy another one. I still look back at it every time I park it and spend 3 or 4 hours washing and waxing it when I give her a deep clean...and that doesn't include the inside! Things I love about it:
1. Looks. OMG the looks!
3. Interior - yes it's looks again, but the brushed aluminium dash, the silver surround dials, the push button start...drool! It's closer to an Aston Martin interior than the bland BMW and Audi interiors in the same price bracket.
4. The noise when you push her - yes you can cruise around town in complete comfort, but I still just go out for a drive on a sunny day around country lanes and leave her in 3rd most of the time to hear the engine growl.
In essence, it's not perfect, but it's more than just a car.
EDIT: Oh to answer the OP: buy it!
