I've shipped the keys to my friend who owns a Workshop... Waiting for feedback.. I'm trying to get the cost of making a moulded part and worst case scenario a machined part. I'll post an update as soon I know more. The workshop is in India so it has taken some time and will take more to get an answer

I have news!!!!!

So finally after about a year of hassle we have found the right supplier, finalised the process and got everything in place.

What you are looking at there is a 100% white metal cast key end chrome plated. It will never peel it will not break it is a permanent replacement to the peeling ends we all suffer.

What you will also notice is how rough the finish looks!!! this is because they used my key end as a template for the mould and my key end was / is as battered as that!!!

What we now need to move the project on and get a smooth / perfect key end cast is a loan! Would someone on here who has a 100% perfect no blemishes or scratches etc key end be willing to dismantle their key and send us the end? From this we will create a mould and cast all the ends from.

Your help is needed to push this project over the line and solve the key problem once and for all

Looks good Jay.

Mine is a guy who is trying to machine it out of billet for the first couple of pieces and then use this to make the mould.

There was someone selling a brand new key on ebay last week. Unfortunately I didn't 'watch it', but if anyone did, maybe they could see who the winning bidder was and 'contact seller' to see if they'd be interested in loaning it out. maybe it was someone on here who bought it?
Unfortunately both my keys have multiple shards that slice into my hand every now and then so no good for a template.

Wouldn't you be able to make a mould from from a 3D printer scan of a key?

The resolution won't be good enough unfortunately. we need a 100% perfect original.

My key looked ok but if you look at the result in the pictures you can see every micro indentation where the small scalpel blade I used to remove the peeling chrome is.

I'm not personally willing to buy a new key from Alfa for this project so hoping the community at large will be able to help out. I know there are some fastidiously careful owners on here with pristine vehicles that will have a key that looks like it just arrived from Alfa yesterday.

We only need it for around 10 days. and then only the key end not the key blade.

I used my spare key as the original was a mess, ive never had a set of keys on it so is as near to 100% as a used key can be.

There is a new one on eBay, I will be happy to buy and donate, I just don't want to get into a bidding war with loads of other members.

I saw that, but from the picture it looked like the key end had a few imperfections on it, almost like it was not 100% new just an uncut blade in an old fob. could be wrong though!

I need perfection or you will all just moan at me about the finished product

Hi Jabawok,

I have a brand new unused fob - the previous owner lost one of the keys and a condition of sale was that a replacement came with the car. It sits waiting to impress the next owner...

If you're stuck, I can send it BUT I'm in Perth, Australia, so it ain't really convenient! Let me know how you go with members who're closer to home.

Cheers,
Andrew

Hi JabawokJayUK,
My spare is less than perfect.
Just a thought but could the blank that you had cast be finished by some Carefull dremel work?

Good work btw!

mine was too far off perfect. If we get one "close to" we can maybe finesse the mould but it will take more work.

We just need a decent master key to start with!

Those that have said they have one but its not quite perfect, feel free to post a picture and I'll see if its viable.
