Good stuff. I'd be interested if the price was reasonable. Either one or two - depending on cost.

Nope.

The guy who is doing it is illusive. I do pester him occasionally, but its a balancing act.

Hi,

Is it time to give up from these keys??
Like many people i am interested in one, even 2 depending the cost

Will it be a casting? i cannot see it as a stamping?
I guess i toll to made this would not be too expensive, just the size... and once tool is done raw material will be cheap using aluminuinm and some polish after and it will be done

Give up? maybe, but registering interest was all this thread was about.

Like I have said many times. I am not making them, a guy I know was looking into it for me (he still has my key!) and he is still looking into it, but like me, and most likely, you, he has a day job in which manufacturing keys is not involved

I keep nudging him and he keeps responding positively, but unless one of the may 10's of people on this thread can do it instead, its the only option we have.

Hmmm, given he (guy creating the shell) isn't moving forward, I'll drop out as I've lost interest.

Put me down for 2 key cases if it works out.

Do you happen to have the CAD file of the case? If so I could see if it can printed.

I'm sure this could be made using a 3D printer! As for the silver finish?

The final solution is a 3D printer but I haven't got the time (or the printer) at the minute to progress it.

The only issue with a 3D printer is the finish. Unless its a good one a lot of finishing will be required.

I'm willing to try stuff on my printer for this, it will print quite fine parts on a small layer hight then they can made totally glossy with acetone, which I have experience with: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcXLJRIKGuQ

But I don't think we can make anything silvery that will last any longer than the standard key.

Edit:
Although if anyone is up for some lost PLA casting... I can print the positive form.

well I was thinking of using a 3D printer and then use plasti dip or some sort of coating. Coatings of any kind would normally wear out for sure but maybe the plasti dip being a rubber kinda thing might work well with enough coats..

If I get the CAD I could check with a mate who manufactures parts as well as dies. So could check the cost of the die or machining it from a block (the silver end I mean). Machining the black bit wouldn't be economical.

A 3D scanner will give you a head start on the CAD model and the key comes apart easily enough.

Yep, I could actually CAD it manually but would be less print trials if I scanned a base first before I clean it all up for a print.

I was just looking at SCENECT, free software that can help scan the key using Kinect. I dont have one so I've been asking around if I can borrow one - hope someone close by has one!

I'll post an update once I manage to find the hardware to make the scan. If anyone here has a Kinect and is willing to scan the key end of the fob please let me know.

What ever the solution you can put me down for one. My second key has never been used so is immaculate.

Scanners won't be much good, that's a lossy process.

You need to sit down with a key, a pair of callipers and a mug of coffee.

Please do share what you come up with, there's a guy associated with my hackerspace who can probably cast the part in aluminium.

Sounds like the project is back on track then

I will update the list of those interested in Post #1 once iceman and biggles have a better idea of the probability of doing this via 3D modelling.

I'd be very interested in 2 of these as well. Having spent many hours looking for clean shells all over the internet, unicorn poop is easier to find!!

Many thanks to all for not giving up on this.

Hi All

Started the attempt of CADing the shell. I'm having trouble getting the dimensions right for the curvy bits.

Any one with access to a 3D scanner or Kinect willing to help get a scan of the individual bits of the fob?

I had a chat with a mate who owns a prototyping workshop where I used to work as a student. From the pictures he said it should be hard to make them (2 black plastic bits + the silvery bit (out of metal) + the rubber button part) provided I can provide the 3D model. I can get approx pricing once the 3D model is available.

I can make a different design silver bit if I have to manually CAD it but I guess that isn't something most people (sort of including me) would want - hence the call for help.

If you have Kinect and some time on your hands I can help with links and software to get the scanning done.

I have some rather random but potentially good news. Out of the blue last night I got a message from the guy who was looking into manufacturing the keys for us. It was a single image of a new key end, cast in white metal ready to be chrome plated!!!!

I guess this means that the original project is back on, but that shouldn't stop the 3d print project from going ahead though.
