Partial gearbox rebuild
I have the whine, like a metallic lathe, in most gears and have been looking into quotes for a rebuild.
There appears to be two options, a complete gearbox out rebuild to change all bearings etc
Or a partial rebuild, gearbox still on car, to replace 6th gear bearings and or pinion bearings (?).
There is a big cost difference. Obviously with the partial, it is not possible to do all bearings and clean out all the crap from the box that could cause future problems.
However the general consensus is that it's the 6th gear bearings that cause all the problems. I have looked at several Vauxhall forums, and you only have to google m32 gearbox to get a flavour of how crap the 1.9 6 speeder is.
I wonder if anyone has experience of the partial rebuild? Gearbox companies are keen to point out that it is not a pet enact fix and that the box will play up again, in time. But then I guess they would.
I am trying to ascertain if anyone can tell me how long such a fix might last. 5K, 15 K, 50K?
The garAges and gearbox specialists I have spoken to are all very helpful, but ultimately have their own interests at heart, nothing wrong with that. Am hoping some owners might have some feedback?
