I know zero about cars, but it seems common sense to get our cars serviced yearly regardless of what is writted in the handbook (The family Toyota goes to one of those generic service centres where a full service and oil change is only about £120). It's a small price to pay to stay on top of many potential minor niggles.
As has been implied above, a regular oil change will eradicate this problem, but sadly much like the cambelt/water pump issue on the diesel cars the handbook is far too generous (in the wrong direction) about when these things should happen.
