I've got the 2.0JTDM for the family car and it is a good one. We get between 600-650 miles per tank, which is a real world MPG of 40-43, which I'm happy with.
The engine is very good for a diesel, with a nice wide torque band, plenty enough torque for the size of the car, and it suits the TI set up so the handling is sweet, especially for a diesel. But then petrols are always better to drive. Having said that, with the TBi the useful revs are limited; the fun is all over by 5K, so I'm not sure how much better it would really be to drive.
Also, bear in mind that the TBi has a much lower engine pan than all other variants, so several users have complained that it bottoms out on speed bumps etc. This may or may not be an issue depending on what the roads you drive are like. Our 2.0JTDM TI doesn't bottom out.
You'll probably be happy with either engine, it just depends on your mileage and what the roads are like.
