As others have said, should you go for it, go straight to a good indie and get the cambelt/water pump done and full service which will cost around £500.
I'd spend more if you have it, but if you don't and feel the need for an Alfa then it may be worth the risk. The 159 is no worse than other makes really, all have their own horror stories for some and forums are places where people come with issues more than just for a chat so they never represent a car fully.
Any car approaching 7 years old with 120k on the clock is going to need money spent on it fairly regularly as there is fair amount of wear and tear there.
I think the seller must be expecting to get beaten down a bit on the price too.
