I've been fortunate enough to drive the 2.4D and the 2.2 JTS and whilst they perform differently, the overall level of performance felt fairly similar, which I guess can be seen from the quoted figures.
The thing that I couldn't get my head around was hearing an oil burner lump in a car a beautiful as the Brera. For me, the whole appeal of an Alfa stems from the looks, the drive and the noise. Other than the noise though, the Diesel probably makes sense if you are doing high mileage.
I've presently got the 2.2 and I'm still taking it easy, but I think I'm averaging about 27mpg although none of that has included motorways, so in theory should be able to better it.
