Right, bear with me here, my Brera is on it's death bed, and I'm fearing the worst
I drove to work last week and there was a loud noise coming from seemingly the timing belt cover area. There was smoke/steam also coming from 'somewhere' in the engine (not entirely sure where, maybe the water pump) that was causing a burning smell.
I called the AA out who had a look and diagnosed the smell as water leaking onto 'a belt'. He didn't know what was causing this noise for sure though. He advised me to drive the car (no offer of a tow) to a local garage and get them to take a look.
I dropped car off, but the mechanic understandably couldn't take a look right away, so I left the car with him and agreed to come back a few hours later when he'd taken a look.
I arrived back a few hours later, but he could't find for certain where the leak was coming from, and advised I visited another garage who will be of more help to me.
I come to start it up and it just turned over and wouldn't fire up. I tried a few times, same thing happened (it nearly got going at one point). Anyway, the battery was going flat and mr mechanic was literally on his way home and couldn't figure out why it wasn't starting. I rang the RAC (me and my partner are with both the AA and RAC respectively) as I wanted their opinion. So, out came the RAC, popped a battery booster on, and this time when I turned it over it made a horrible dispondant noise that was met with 'oh, that's not good' from the RAC man.
He took the small cover off the timing belt and it apprared to have slipped to one side; it was still on, and turning, but it looked at little perished (que the water leaking onto the belt from ealrier).
Although he didnt do a compression test, his opinion was that there was no compression from the cylinders.
So, I got it towed home, and it's now parked up...very upsettingly, and very definately, fcuked.
Can anyone shed any light on whats actually happended here? and what the damage is likely to be?
p.s I'm not happy with the AA for advising me to drive to a garage instead of being towed, and I have made a complaint.
