159 1.9 jtd chug at startup

Looked through the forums and can't quite find a similar problem.

When I start the car from the bottom right side of the car I get a chug chug only at start up. I believe the it's using more mpg that it should a 250+ motorway drive gave me 44mpg 80ish all the way using Cruise control (I know but it was a long way)

The only other time I get anything similar is if you are in really low revs for the gear (sub 1000) i.e at the stalling stage and press on the accelerator it will also chug.

Maf sensor? Big end (shudders) would prefer a loos pipe but I have taken a look and don't believe this to be the case.

Think at 80'ish that is not bad figures. Drop to 70mph, and you should be getting around 50 mpg.
As for chugging, give the MAP and the EGR a bit of a clean, might help.
Shouldn't really be pulling off below 1,000rpm though. Lot of strain on the engine (mine is far more confortable doing it with the EGR blanked mind)

I agree on the fuel consumption. Just did approx. 260 miles in 2 trips to Norwich and back at about those speeds. Got 45 per the trip which I see as normal.

Also try and keep revs about 1500 most of the time as I believe the DMF is hammered more at lower revs.

Yeah the below revs was a wrong gear but it just so happend it made the chugging sound again (each time)

Good to hear the mpg is about right.

I will find the time to clean the EGR and MAF will update once done but will probably be a few weeks before I get the time.

what happens if you put the key in, wait for the press clutch message, take the key out again and put it back in, wait for message again then start? should run glow-plug heat cycle twice and may start a bit smoother.

It could be anything from:
- swirl valves broken
- clogged inlet manifold
- EGR issues
- MAP sensor issues
- MAF sensor issues
- Oil vapor / breather issues
- Glow plugs worn / broken
- Injectors clogged / broken

See what you can come up with. The glow MAP sensor will certainly be gunked up to hell though.
