When it is all crudded up it'll still 'work' fine, but the feedback will be slow, and probably inaccurate, as opposed to an electrical issue which would bring up an error (which the garage probably checked).
It is supposed to measure the manifold pressure, and the ECU will adjust the turbo pressure and fueling accordingly, if it is mis-reading slightly, or slow is measuring changes, then this will affect the running of the engine.
It should be a pretty easy job to do, (I had a screwdriver hex attachment), a bit of carb cleaner and a toothbrush (used lightly), mine certainly felt smoother after a clean, others report the same.
