Gearing on a 2.0JTDM
We've got the 2.0JTDM 170 in a 159SWTI. We are just getting used to the car and are wondering what people find are the correct gears to use at different speeds?
The reason I ask is, if you're at 40mph, 5th gear can feel sluggish and even judder - it wants 4th gear or lower.
Similarly, if you're doing 50mph in our car, in 6th gear the engine won't pull much and isn't as economical as a lower gear would be. It feels much happier in 5th gear, or even 4th.
If you're doing 70mph, it's fine in 6th gear, but if you go up a mild hill at 70, it is more economical dropping to 5th.
Is this normal for this car and engine?
I believe it's got the gearbox from the 2.4 and I know JonSpiderman used to stay in 3rd for quite a lot of the twisty sections of our Alfaruns circa 30-50mph. We are used to driving petrols and a Ford 140PS 2.0TDCi with a smaller turbo, so it may well be driving style.
For background, the engine runs smoothly (even on idle), doesn't smoke or rev hunt, and has only 19,000 on the clock - although it's possible that the first 18,000 may have been town driving in North London (we don't really know, it's only from looking at the service stamps and V5).
If you think this is an EGR issue, I'll get some carb cleaner and follow the EGR cleaning guide for the 1.9 (I can't see one for the 2.0).
