Strange wiring issue
Question about the wiring for the REAR 12v socket in Alfa 159 SW:
Simple version: Is there another fuse somewhere along the wiring route from the fuse box to the rear 12v socket. The fuse is fine, but testing the wires at the socket end and there is no volts??
I have 2 small boys and they like to play their DS + tablets on long journeys. Their charger cables are not long enough to reach the 12v socket in the estate boot, so I bought a 3-way extension thing and intended to extent its cable to reach to the back seat. To make sure everything was working before starting, I plugged the extension into the rear socket and tested the voltage in the extension using my meter. It was all fine until I dropped one of the probes into the extension socket for a moment and it gave me a tiny puff of smoke. The extension lost all power and I figured I had blown the fuse, but this is where it gets confusing...
The car fuse is fine - it powers the rear 12v and the rear wiper. The rear wiper works and changing the fuse makes no difference. The 3-gang extension works in the front 12v socket, so its fuse is OK, but the rear socket is dead - no volts at all. I have unplugged the wire from the back of the socket and it has no volts, so there is a fault somewhere on the wire.
The short was only for half a second, so not enough time for anything to melt. I assume there is another fuse somewhere that controls just the rear 12v socket, but WHERE???
