Re: Its been bugging me, why the jump to 159?
This is what i speculated:
It's not 157 because this suggest it is merely the 156 successsor. Clearly Alfa wants the 159 to compete with BMW 3 series, so you needed to jump ½ a class.. i think they did that quite well. You can't rally put the 156 and 159 in the same class. in fact it is closer to the 166 then it is to the 156.
It's not 158, because when they do the same trick wih the replacement for the 147, they will have to call it 149 since 148 again would make it the successor of 147. Since there is now a big gap between the 147 and the 159, i think the new 147 will be closer to the 156 then the current 147.
There is also a different way they might go. Personally i think this is what we will see. They will make a 147 successor called 148. This will be a hatchback. On the same platform, they will also make a Sedan. This will be called 149, and will be the real 156 successor.
If you look at VW, the Golf would match the 148, and the new Jetta which really is the same class as the 156, would match the 149. The Passat would match he 159.
Then we will have a 148, 149 and a 159 giving the impression of car is the same range. If they had gone for 158, it would not have made sense, since it would indicate a kindship to a hatchback.
