Spider fuel problems?

My 2001 3.0 litre Spider idles fine, but on the open road loses power, then fires away again, then loses power and so on. This is an intermittent fault: there one day, not the next.

I suspect contaminated fuel as no dash lights show up but there is a different noise from the engine, like an air sucking sound not there before. Nothing obvious to my eyes.

Dirty injectors? Anyone know how to drain the tank on these? I understand from a local dealer that the fuel filter is inaccessible inside the tank.

I can now answer my own question! The interior of the fuel tank had rusted quite badly, and the resultant deposits had blocked up the filter and pump, located in the top of the tank. It is not necessary to remove the tank to access these, as they are located under the carpet in the roof stowage area. However, the tank has to be replaced, which meant lowering the rear suspension and dropping the tank out underneath. The garage has managed to locate a good quality second hand tank complete with pump and filter.

To prevent a fuel tank rusting, it should be left full of petrol as the exposed metal can 'sweat', producing water vapour which then proceeds to rust the interior, even with a good metal protection system. I wish I had always done this...

You need to be in the GTV/Spider forum for this type of Spider.
