Looking to buy a 159 but need some advice
I am looking to buy a second hand 159 diesel but I have a few questions I am hoping someone may be able to answer.
I have recently changed jobs and I am now commuting 50 miles per day, mostly motorway. I am currently driving a 2001 X-Type Jaguar 3.0 V6 and am struggling to get 28 mpg out of it, despite treating the accelerator like it was made of broken glass whilst wearing no shoes!
My car prior to the Jag was a Alfa 156 1.8 petrol which I loved, before a white van driver totalled it by ignoring a give way junction.
By doing some sums, I have calculated that if I get myself a diesel that can achieve around 45 mpg, I could save myself about £1k per year. So, I started looking for a family diesel and I came across the 159 and that was it. I have tried looking at all other 2 litre diesels but when I look, I say to myself 'but it's not an Alfa and it just doesn't look anywhere near as nice'.
I have test driven a 1.9 jtdm and it is plenty powerful enough for me, so would prefer this over a 2.4L.
My question is, because this is going to be a family car (wife and 2 year old to transport), would the Ti be too hard a ride (or more to the point, do you think I could get away with convincing my other half that the Ti is a good family car) or should I go with the Lusso?
I like the fact that the rear seats fold flat on the Ti and thought that could be a good bargaining tool, although I do have a large roof box so will get roof bars, so folding rear seats isn't a necessity.
I had my heart set on a Lusso, but then I came across a couple of ads for Ti's and now I'm smitten.
Another problem I have is budget. I have £6k but hope to get £1k for my Jag in part ex, so that's £7k, although i could stretch to £7.5, but I was keeping the extra £500 for a remap.
For my budget, I am looking at the higher mileage cars, say 80-90,000. What mileage would you say would be too high? Should I bite the bullet and get a lower mileage Lusso? Saying that, I am so taken with the Ti that I am even prepared to wait 6 months for the right one to come along!!
At that mileage I am also looking for cars with FSH with the cambelt already changed. Most do state this although very few say that the water pump has also been changed. Would this be a problem? I read somewhere that it was only a problem with pre '08 models.
One more question, does anyone know where I can get a remap in the South Wales area? I live in Newport so looking at maybe Cardiff or even Bristol. I have searched but the nearest I can find is in Birmingham!
Sorry for the lengthy post,
