Spider 2.2 JTS Engine light - Flat spot - Cam Chain
I'm writing this to give others a heads up, and also to gather some more opinion.
For a little while now I've been getting a flat spot on the revs at about 3000 rpm. It's is different to that mentioned in the 2.2 hesitation thread as it comes and goes. It seemed to make the exhaust sound a bit louder too. I started thinking about a few options, exhaust blowing sticking valves of some form etc. Then three weeks ago I was driving to Birmingham and the engine light came on. I called the AA to look at it who brought up code p0013 Cam shaft sensor open. They cancelled the fault and the flat spot disappeared. It was fine for a week and then the same thing again, this time, being at home, I couldn't call them out and as it was a Saturday afternoon, I could do nothing about it so used the Wife's car instead. On Monday I went to take the car to the local dealer to see what the problem was and typically (miraculously) the fault had cleared and and the flat spot was gone again.
I called JP at Alfa Workshop who said very quickly - Cam Chain needs replacing and sensors are probably clogging up with swarf from the chain, but it is drivable and the chain won't break and don't worry about it too much until the next service.
Also it will cost £550 to replace, which is competetive as far as I can see. Has anyone had this problem before? My next service is some way off so should I book it in sooner rather than later?
