I had a steer rack replacement last week and I bought my car like a month ago also changed the fluid bcz was red and two weeks later it was leaking like a b tch and had to replace my steer rack. I changed the fluid bcz it was really making lot of noises and after the change the noises went away faster then with the red fluid but only after it was on for like 5 minutes so the fluid was warm, but seems it didn't helped bcz my steering rack was gone anyway ...
Now they put red again, I think I will leave it this way.
I still get groan noise when do full lock (not very loud but I never had a car that make steering noises), mybe they had to change my steering pump also bcz don't know why it still making noise ?
All this talk about the hydraulic fluids is very confusing, seems like no one really has perfect answer, I can't believe any fluid would wrack a steering rack except the red fluid is too agressive for the seals, that would make sense why it would tear down and then you change to the green fluid that's lot thinner it goes through seels like you would put thick oil and then thinner oil it will leak bcz before the thicker oil sealed off the wand.
I can't believe Alfa not reconize this problem bcz I think this will be my last Alfa, I love these cars but it doesnt give me confident feeling anymore with a car that's not reable. I had a 156 before was a nice car but at the end it was letting me down too.
